US CPSC Updates Mandatory Safety Standard for Portable Bed Rails

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has incorporated the
latest version of ASTM F2085 into its mandatory safety standard for portable
bed rails.

ASTM F2085-19 – Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Portable Bed
Rails – defines a portable bed rail as:

“[A] portable railing installed on the side of an adult bed and/or on
the mattress surface which is intended to keep a child from falling out of bed.”

The main difference between this iteration of the standard and the
previous is a change in the sheet’s fiber content. Previously, the blend had
been 50:50 cotton and polyester. This is now replaced with a 60:40 blend of
cotton and polyester, a blend that is commonly available on the market.

The CPSC published its direct final rule initiating this change on February
25, 2020, and it was incorporated without modification and became effective on
May 20, 2020.
