US CPSC Approves New Infant Sleep Product Safety Standard

SGS publishes overview of the changes
proposed in the new federal safety rule for infant sleep products – 16 CFR
1236.

Approved by the US Consumer Product
Safety Commission (CPSC), 16 CFR 1236 affects products intended for use by
infants aged under five months. The proposed standard states that the sleep
surface angle should be no greater then 10 degrees and must meet the
requirements of the standard for bassinets and cradles.

The CPSC intends to incorporate, by
reference ASTM F3118-17a, but with several exclusions and additions. These
include:

  • Replacing “infant inclined sleep products” with “infant sleep products”
  • Replacing “accessory inclined sleep product” with “accessory infant
    sleep product”
  • Removing requirement for compliance with various sections in ASTM
    F3118-17a
