SGS Publishes Overview of Rules and Guidance for Using Recycled Plastics in Food Contact Products

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published a review of the rules governing recycled plastics and their use in food contact products in the US and European Union (EU).

Plastics are used in a wide variety of products that encounter food – containers, kitchen appliances, cookware, food processors, packaging, serving utensils, etc. As we move towards a circular economy, the issues of non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) and contamination in recycled plastics mean authorities in the EU and US have raised concerns over safety.

SGS’s Consumer Compact article looks at the problems associated with the use of recycled plastics in food contact articles. It also considers US and EU responses and offers a solution to ensure manufacturers remain compliant when using recycled materials.
