Seven Generic Fiber Names Added to List in US Textile Fiber Products Identification Act

On November 5, 2020, an updated Rules
and Regulations under the Textile Fiber Products Identification Act comes into
effect, incorporating the latest version of the relevant ISO standard, ISO
2076:2013(E) Textiles – Man-made fibers – generic names.

Under the Textile Fiber Products
Identification Act (16 CFR 303) certain textile products offered for sale in
the US must disclose:

  • Generic name and percentages by weight of the
    constituent fibers in the product
  • Manufacturer’s or marketer’s name
  • Country where the product was processed or
    manufactured

Section 303.7 of the Textile Rules
(Generic names and definitions for manufactured fibers) states manufacturers
must use generic names for man-made fibers. This provision lists the generic
names and definitions established by the FTC through its textile petition
process and it incorporates by reference the generic names and definitions set out
in the ISO 2076 standard.

The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
released the amendment to incorporate the latest 2013 iteration of ISO 2076,
which contains seven additional generic fiber names not previously included in
the 2010 standard. These are:

  • Chitin
  • Ceramic
  • Polybenzimidazol
  • Polycarbamide
  • Polypropylene/polyamide bicomponent
  • Protein
  • Trivinyl

The amendment is designed to reduce
compliance costs, increase flexibility for disclosing fiber information to
consumers, and help manufacturers develop labelling that satisfies the
requirements of multiple countries.
