Peru has proposed a ban on bisphenol A (BPA) in varnishes and
coatings that are used in food contact materials and articles for infants and
young children.
Peru’s Ministry of Health signaled its intention to regulate BPA
in a draft regulation circulated by the World Trade Organization (WTO) in July
2021. A public consultation was then held that ended on September 2, 2021.
According to the WTO notification, the draft legislation under
Ministerial Resolution No. 712-2021/MINSA of June 3, 2021, will be adopted 180
days after its publication and will enter into force six months from the date
of adoption.
Stakeholders are advised to stay informed about the progress of
this proposal to ensure their products remain compliant.
