New Mandatory Standards for Food Contact Plastics in Thailand

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, is advising stakeholders that Thailand has mandated three standards for certain food contact plastic materials and articles.

Thailand’s Ministry of Industry issued a Ministerial Regulation in April 2022 covering the following standards:

  • TIS 655 Part 1-2553 (2010) ‘Plastic utensils for food – Part 1 Polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, poly(ethylene terephthalate), poly(vinyl alcohol) and poly(methyl pentene)’
  • TIS 655 Part 2-2554 (2011) ‘Plastic utensils for food – Part 2 Poly(vinyl chloride), polycarbonate, polyamide and poly(methyl methacrylate)’
  • TIS 655 Part 3-2554 (2011) ‘Plastic utensils for food Part 3 Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene and styrene-acrylonitrile’

These standards contain, inter alia, provisions relating to safety, including for odor and taste, and resistance to impact and temperature. There are also rules for conformity and testing and requirements for:

  • Packaging
  • Marking
  • Labeling
  • Sampling

SGS has published SafeGuardS 070/22, containing more information on the standards and including details of the migration limits for the various materials.

Stakeholders should be aware these standards will become mandatory from January 3, 2023.
