New Chinese Product Standard for Infant and Children’s Knitted Garments

On June 1, 2021, the Standardization
Administration of China’s new national product standard for knitted garments to
be worn by infants and children – GB/T 39508-2020 – came into effect.

Included in China’s No. 26
announcement of approved national standards in 2020, the new national product
standard applies to garments that are predominantly made from knitted fabrics. It
covers knitted garments for:

  • Infants – less than or equal to 36 months of age (the garments generally
worn by the infants with a height not greater than 100 cm may be considered as
    garments for infants.)
  • Children – aged 3 to 14 years:
    • Girl’s garment – considered to be garments
generally worn by girls of a height greater than 100 cm but not greater than
      155 cm
    • Boy’s garment – considered to be garments generally
worn by boys of a height greater than 100 cm but not greater than 160 cm

These height definitions mean knitted
garments worn by a child less than or equal to 130 cm would be considered a
garment for a child under 7 years of age.

GB/T 39508-2020 includes technical provisions
relating to both internal quality and appearance quality.
