India’s New Toy Safety Order Delayed Until 2021

The Indian Ministry of Commerce and
Industry has deferred the implementation of the new Toys (Quality Control)
Order until 2021.

The Ministry published its Toys (Quality
Control) Amendment Order, 2020 on September 15, 2020. This delays the effective
date of the Toys (Quality Control) Order, 2020 until January 1, 2021. The
original effective date was to have been September 1, 2020.

Toys (Quality Control) Order, 2020, was
published in February 2020. It implements a number of new requirements for toy
safety, including provisions relating to, inter alia, use of the latest
versions of Indian standards, and toys bearing the Standard Mark under a
license from the Bureau of Indian Standards as per Scheme-I of Schedule-II of
the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018 and
authorizing the Bureau to be the certifying and enforcement authority.

Stakeholders
are advised to check their products conform to the latest toy safety standards
for India.
