On February 28, 2019, Health Canada issued an updated industry guide covering the regulatory flammability requirements for futons.
The guide includes information on:
- Canadian legislation applicable to futons
- Summary of test methods for assessing futon flammability
- Impact of chemical flame retardants, materials and constructions on futon flammability
- Educating consumers on fire safety
Futons are a Japanese form of mattress that can be rolled or folded. In the West, they are often used in combination with a frame that converts from a sofa to a bed. They are subject to the requirements of both the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA) and Mattresses Regulations (SOR/2016-183).
The regulations define a mattress as an item that is intended, promoted or normally used for the purpose of being slept on that contains resilient material enclosed within a ticking. The definition of mattress does not include:
- Mattress pad
- Infant multi-use pad
- Any part of an article of upholstered furniture that may also be used for the purpose of being slept on that is not a separate mattress
- Crib, cradle or bassinet mattress
- One-of-a-kind prescription mattress
The issuing of a new industry guide does not signify any change in the Mattress Regulations (SOR/2016-183).
