EU Updates Standard for Olfactory Board Games, Cosmetic Kits and Gustative Games

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, is advising suppliers that the European Union (EU) has amended its standard on the use of substances and mixtures in a variety of toys and games.

Updated on May 4, 2022, by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), the standard – EN 71-13:2021+A1:2022 – covers:

  • Olfactory board games
  • Cosmetic kits
  • Gustative games
  • Supplementary sets for the above

Changes have been made to various sections, including greater emphasis that cosmetic kits, gustative games, and their supplementary sets, must not be intended for children under 36 months.

SGS’s original SafeGuardS 072/22 includes a table summarizing the major changes in EN 71-13:2021+A1:2022 for stakeholders to get a better overview of amendment 1.

EN 71-13:2021+A1:2022 must be given the status of a national standard by November 2022, with conflicting national standards being withdrawn. It is expected that this standard will be harmonized under the Toy Safety Directive upon official acceptance by the European Commission (EC) and publication in the Official Journal of the EU (OJEU).
