China has released a new national standard that
covers the terminology, definition and identification of biobased materials –
GB/T 39514-2020.
The standard covers materials made from
biomass and/or by a biological manufacturing process. They include biobased:
- Chemicals
- Polymers
- Plastics
- Chemical fibers
- Rubber
- Material additives
- Composites
- Biodegradable paints
- Products made from a variety of biobased
materials

The standard includes specifics on
identifying biobased materials and products. It specifies that biobased materials
must be identified on the product or outer packaging, although there are
different requirements depending on the product. Product identification can be achieved
by molding, printing, embossing, branding or any other clear and indelible
marking method.

The new standard was included in China’s No.
26 announcement of national standards approved in 2020. It will come into
effect on June 1, 2021.
