China Implements Two New Industry Standards for Knitted Clothing

On November 1, 2019, the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced the implementation of two new Industry Standards for knitted garments.

The two standards cover:

  • Knitted maternity garments – FZ/T 73063-2019
  • Knitted beachwear – FZ/T 73062-2019

Both standards apply to products that are primarily made from knitted fabrics. For knitted maternity wear it applies to knitted garments for people who are pregnant. It should be noted that the knitted beachwear standard may also be referred to for similar products. The beachwear standard is also not applicable to clothing for infants and children aged 36 months of less.

Stakeholders should be aware ‘beachwear’ is defined as clothing that is suitable for wearing on the beach, including beach skirts, beach pants, or other beach outfits.

These standards contain basic requirements relating to, inter alia, intrinsic quality and appearance quality.

Intrinsic quality for both covers bursting strength, formaldehyde, pH value, odour, fiber content, decomposable carcinogenic aromatic amines, colour fastness to laundering, water, and perspiration, and dimensional change and appearance quality after laundering.

For knitted maternity wear the standard also covers:

  • Colour fastness to dry rubbing and wet rubbing
  • Pilling
  • Electromagnetic shielding effectiveness

For knitted beachwear the standard also covers:

  • Colour fastness to seawater, light, rubbing and textiles wetted with artificial perspiration
  • Colour fastness to transfer in joints

Both standards contain appearance quality requirements relating to appearance defects, deviation tolerance of specified dimension, and tolerances of dimension difference for symmetric parts.

For knitted maternity wear there is also a requirement for crotch depth, and for kitted beachwear there is a requirement for sewing.

Stakeholders are now advised to check their products conform to the latest Industry Standards for knitted clothing in China.
