BIFMA Releases New Standard for Home Office and Occasional-Use Table and Storage Products

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, is reminding stakeholders that BIFMA has released a new standard for home office and occasional-use tables and storage units.

In April 2022, BIFMA published ANSI/BIFMA X6.5 Home Office and Occasional-Use Table and Storage Products. This replaces ANSI/SOHO S6.5-2008, which was BIFMA’s first attempt to define standards for domestic furniture, including desks and storage units, which is a standard commonly cited by the US home furnishings industry.

ANSI/BIFMA X6.5 represents a complete rewrite of ANSI/SOHO S6.5. It is based on:

  • ANSI/BIFMA X5.9-2019 Storage Units
  • ANSI/BIFMA X5.5-2021 Desk and table products

The new standard provides a uniform basis for assessing product safety, durability and structural performance. It describes test methods and appropriate performance requirements for commercial and home office:

  • Desks
  • Tables
  • Storage units

It is not designed for testing products that have been in use.
